Grief Counseling Q&A

What is grief counseling?

Grief is your reaction to losing someone or something important to you. Grief occurs across all ages — but everyone processes it differently. Grief counseling can provide support after a loss, such as:

  • A breakup or divorce
  • The death of a loved one, family member, or pet
  • The end of a project or life chapter
  • Moving
  • A job or opportunity loss
  • An identity or safety loss

Counseling can help you cope with the painful experience of a loss stripping you away from your world or identity.

When do I need grief counseling?

It’s natural and healthy to grieve, but sometimes the grieving process can negatively affect your daily life or go on for an extended period of time. You may need grief counseling if you or a family member is experiencing:

  • Issues taking care of yourself or others
  • Sleep problems
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Denial or shock
  • Fatigue
  • Low motivation
  • Guilt or shame
  • Irritability
  • Isolation
  • Avoidance
  • Yearning for your loved one

The iSeek Counseling team offers a supportive, confidential space to share your thoughts, fears, and loss. They understand how difficult opening up can be, and counseling allows you time to process your feelings during sessions.

How does grief counseling work?

With the iSeek Counseling team, there is no expectation that your grief will go away or that you should move on. The team offers virtual, in-person, individual, and group grief and loss sessions for as long as you need.

It’s also beneficial for your overall health to seek care as grief manifests physical symptoms — the severe stress from living with it can affect your heart health and stress hormones.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) encourages you to accept negative feelings and focus on healthier behaviors, while cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) helps you create new, positive thought patterns.

Play and art therapy can be particularly helpful for children coping with loss and learning how to grieve in a healthy way.

During grief counseling the team can help you:

  • Express yourself freely
  • Accept the reality of the loss
  • Feel seen and validated
  • Develop self-compassion and confidence
  • Understand how your loss affects other areas of your life
  • Learn coping mechanisms
  • Avoid risky behaviors
  • Learn self-care tools
  • Restore work and school success
  • Rebuild relationships
  • Adjust to life without the deceased
